The Happenings #3

You know what I love about my blog?
NO- pressure.

I have absolutely NO-pressure to type a single word. Some days, I take my fingers to the keyboard and realize... this post, I don't want to share. And I just save the draft. Some days, I log on to my blogger account and check the date of my last post and think, "Hmmm, maybe I should post today...? Even a little something." And then I say, hmmmm.... NO-pressure. And then it's days like this... where I have a quiet morning off that I can sit and reflect about the last week. Oh, phenemonenal.

The Happenings #3:

I am currently cuddling: these two. My new puppy (14 weeks old!), Alani and my sweet husband Daniel. The name is EXACTLY not how you would read it. It's pronounced... Al-ugh-knee. Where did we get the name? Short story, it's a family name I love... and the name my parents always wished they would have had for my middle name! She is short and funny, has sharp teeth and claws, she is fierce (Tyra would be proud) and she has a HUGE personality. She is definitley both a little bit of Daniel and I. (Her fierceness comes from me.)

I am making a habit of: going to the gym! I bought my membership on the 16th have almost been everyday! I make time and I love making time. Even though "they say" you begin to see change in yourself at 4 weeks- I ALREADY SEE IT! I have so much more energy. I sleep better. I eat better. And the best thing is: I am competitive with myself and I LOVE IT! I will be going today too!

Trying to wake up on an early morning to work out!
I am drooling over: vegetables. (hahahahahhahaha) I know, weird. Who drools over veggies. But seriously, brussel sprouts, brocolli, green beans... ughhhh. Yum. EEOV and garlic. I cannot wait for the farmer's markets and produce stands! HURRY UP SPRING!

My favorite accessories to wear daily: my new Michael Kors handbag and clutch. If you didn't know I work at MK (coming on a year fairly quickly) and have yet to buy myself a bag! Daniel, spoiled me with a sweet gift after Christmas of my favorite bag- the Astor Satchel and I added a sweet little clutch to hold my cards, cash, phone and keys. I love it! Thanks baby!

I am struggling with: what comes out of my mouth. It has always been a problem, caused some conflict and it's time to really become disciplined in my "thinking before speaking."

I am watching: Heroes. Oh. MY. Goooodness. Daniel and I cannot get away from it! Addicting. :)

We want to: buy a newer car, move into a home that has a 2nd bedroom, and make more time on my weekends off to road trip and adventure.

I'm so exicted: to plan my trip to CA (still figuring out details) for Emma's 1st birthday and dedication. Ahhhhh. She is getting so old! :(

I am enjoying: reading daily in the "Jesus Calling" mini devotion and being in the Word... rocking to the Gungor Pandora station in my car commuting to work, and as of 10 minutes ago... cuddling with my puppy as she sleeps on me.

73 miles, 6 hours, and 2 bikes!

Do you remember this post a couple weeks ago about all the different ideas I wanted to write about in a month? Well, the month is almost over from when I started. And I have only done ONE IDEA. Which is fine, no pressure for me. But, I would have liked to cover all of these beautiful topics:

It's been one year, now what?
73 miles, 6 hours, and 2 bikes!
The struggles of a working domestic wife.

Am I comparing or compromising?
Photo Challenge Series: City in 5 Photos (on the 13th will be posted!)
Remaining me in my marriage without losing him!

So far, I did the last one. It is probably one of the most vulnerable, interesting and helpful blogs for myself. Those of you who read it, thanks. Those of you who learned from it, praise God. He is the one who brought me through this experience and challenged me to look at it simply and share it with others. :)

But today, I want to talk about "73 miles, 6 hours, and 2 bikes!" YES! Daniel and I did this! My husband and I finished this... and guess what??? All with a smile on our faces at the finish line. :)

At the end of July, we went camping with my family. Here is the post about it. :) ONE OF THE BEST camping trips I have ever been on with my family, especially with new baby Emma-Elizabeth with us! I had been "cycling" for about 6 months... Daniel says I am a natural. He challenged me to ride around Lake Tahoe with him in one day. And with that, the challenge began!

The day before we headed out on our first big ride together, we decided to test the route a little bit with an hour ride. With lots of steep steep mountains, absolutely beautiful scenery and a cranky attitude from me... we were challenged on this 14 mile trip.

We finally got back to the camp site after I threw a fit, yes... I am 22 years old and I still throw fits. Cute, huh? Later that night, after I got over myself and before we went to bed, I made sure to have a "pep talk" with Daniel before we woke up at 6am for our BIG ride.

See if you know Daniel at all, like I do, you should know that he is one of the MOST PATIENT people I have ever met in my life. We are so opposite in this area of life. He is a thinker... and NEVER lashes out. He listens and sometimes never even says a word in defense. And for the longest time, I thought when he wasn't "fighting" me... he was running away from the problem. But no, Daniel is patient, loving, thoughtful, not careless with his words, and he can be an amazing encourager and terrific challenger. God totally uses this man as a tool to grow me and mold me into the "beautiful thing" He wants me to be. (At our wedding, during the "union" part of the ceremony... we had our parents pray for us rather than taking communion, or washing each other's feet, or mixing sand. And we had the song by Gungor "Beautiful Things" playing in the background. So sweet.)

After letting Daniel know how "I work," we slept so soundly and woke up ready. He had prepared for this day WAY before we left for camping... packing us all the small goodies for our ride, getting us "energy" water, and for me- new cycling shorts that we more than necessary and COMFY! After, I believe, a banana we began our journey with excitement.

The first 28 miles were some of the hardest. I remember thinking, ARE WE HALF WAY DONE? And Daniel answered my thoughts with no, but we are a THIRD done! He kept positive and for the most part I kept quite, otherwise the long and painful ride would have been even more long and painful due to the not so sweet words that would come out of my mouth. As we were almost at about 35 miles, Daniel asked if I need a break and I challenged us to continue on until we hit 50 miles! So we trekked on and pushed up those mountains! I ALMOST GAVE UP! It was less than  5 miles to 50 and I was pushing and pulling the petal as much as I could... I was literally going like 2 miles per hour, but I couldn't stop. As I am grunting and hurting, Daniel encourages me with "milestones" and "you're so hot babe" comments. I am pretty sure it was the "you're so hot" comments that really got me through those awful 5 miles.

WE FINALLY HIT 50 MILES! WE HIT 50! I couldn't be any more excited! The sun was finally getting hot, and so was my water! My legs were getting jelly like and my head was sweating! I wanted to rip of all my clothes and ride naked, but no THANK YOU- not a lovely look on me. ;) After about a 30 minute rest because I was so tired, Daniel had us move on!! The last 25 miles were so much better. There was only a little bit of climbing but a lot more down hill and flat areas- thank God! I "soaked in" the downhill rides and I continued to petal on the flats.

We made it to "the strip" where it was quite busy but was the most exciting part! Knowing that I hit "the strip" meant that I was almost finished and EVERYTHING was flat! NO MORE HILLS! NO MORE MOUNTAINS, just flat and bumpy roads. The last ten miles were dreadful. My legs hurt so bad. I couldn't feel the "in between" of my legs (haha), and my feet were feeling numb. I had a cramp in my side and was almost in tears. But once again, I can hear Daniel encouraging me... telling me how cool of a wife I am, how hot I was, and how proud he was of me.

It was time. Time to meet everyone at the campsite! It was TIME TO GO THROUGH THE FINISH LINE! I know this sounds lame but as we entered into the campgrounds on our way to our specific campsite, I had watery eyes. I was so proud of us. We made all 73 miles of cycling mountains and roads with smiles, laughs, jokes, and encouragement! We made it together! We finished EVERY mile together. He pushed me through it! I wouldn't have finished without him, at least in a day! I would have TOTALLY given up! As we got to the campsite, our family was there to cheer us on!! :)

Daniel, he is the most amazing husband. I learn so much from him... and I learned so much especially on our ride together. One thing I hadn't mentioned yet was how he led the ride, behind. Yes, he rode behind me the whole time. He knew how discouraging it was for me to "try and catch up" and he let me be in the front for 6 hours! This just showed me how much he really did listen to me the night before. And how much he really did care about how I felt and me finishing. He is so loving. And he can be so selfless. He just amazes me. Thanks baby. :)

Yes, this blog is a bit of a brag about not only the biggest ride I have ever finished, but how ABSOLUTELY amazing my husband is and how much I have to learn from him! I love you Daniel. Thanks for being my husband. :)

Thanks for reading today!! Happy writing to you my friends! For those of you married, I challenge you to take an adventure with your husband!! There is so much that I didn't even get to share with you that I loved and learned about on this ride!!! Do it and let me know the plan!! :)

Remaining me in our marriage without losing him.

If you have any heart- which I am sure you do- you should know this is a difficult post to write about. This is the second time I have written this. There are lots of feelings I need to be aware of. Lots of decision making before I click publish. There is a lot of thought, a lot of heart, and a lot of vulnerability going into a post like this. But the longer I have been married, almost a year... the more that I see many brides go through this. I believe some brides (like myself) go through these "dark days" earlier, and other's... later. But I have begun this process of remaining me, without losing him. It's a battle that can be won... and this is just part of my journey. :)

Of course, the first few months of marriage are the most fun, difficult, wierd, and awkward. Especially if you remained living separately through out the dating game and waited to be "one's love" til marriage. That's what we did... and I am so glad we waited. :)

BUT time was a tickin'. I was a itchin'. And I was more not myself than ever. Here in Washington, it doesn't help the rainy days, full of never ending clouds and never-a-chance of sun. Lots of changes were always happening... and there just wasn't a time of consistency. There was never a moment to catch-up with myself, at least that is what it felt like. These circumstances didn't help what I was fighting, especially when I had no idea what I was fighting.

(Disclaimer: Unfortunately, Daniel is a part of this growing process with me. And for some, it could be easy to blame Daniel for "making me think this way." BUT PLEASE UNDERSTAND, Daniel has always encouraged me to be confident in myself and in the Truth I know. He is honest with me.  And it's unfortunate that I abused the privilege of him sharing his opinions and vulnerability with me and made it "mine." Through out the past 5 years, I have learned more from this man than I ever imagined. He is definitely a tool God has been using in my life, and I can ONLY imagine the work He will do in my life through Daniel. So please, if anything, be encouraged in Daniel's love and comfort  for me, and encouragement to me. Thanks.)

Through out my relationship with Daniel, I realized that I lost me. Fortunately, I never lost him... but I did lose apart of me. Daniel was really the first boy I ever loved (besides my Daddy). I had crushes and such... but never did I think so highly as I did of Daniel. He was/is hot. He was/is adventurous. And he loves God and could see it in his life. I was head over heels for this guy. And I wanted everything to be with him. :)

BUT, this became a problem... of course. And I didn't even see it coming. Now 4 years later, it came to smack me in my face... right in the middle of our first year of marriage. I felt like I was always fighting something but I didn't know what it was. I felt lost. Isolated and sterile. Oh and how far that word makes me feel from everything- my husband, my family, my friends, my favorite state (CA) and my first love, the Lord. How far I felt from everything, including myself.

My whole life I had struggled with confidence (and it didn't help that I clung to Daniel for my life). I hated making decisions and I valued the opinion of others. Most of the time, I did things for other's reactions and affections... what a burden. But this attitude and focus of "doubting myself" made it very hard to figure out who I really am, what I am really about and what my heart really feels. Especially in marriage. The whole idea "one flesh" is sort of scary, at least that is what I was thinking a few months ago. As a woman, you take on so many different roles: domestic, full-time working, friend and wife...and some people take on MOM all in the same year! Then to blend that with different tastes, ideas, favorites, and wants... it can get a little messy. It's a lot of change at once. And at this point, I was lost. I didn't know where Jamie Angela Hoeppner went... but I was willing to find her. So, the journey began.

During the beginning, I was a bit hesitant. I was texting a friend and told her how isolated and sterile this process feels. It's the feeling of being distant and explainable... like I couldn't wrap my feelings into words. But as I think now, the process didn't have to be so distant... but my prayer life, was non-existent. I couldn't be any farther from the One who is always so near. I lost my self-confidence (of what I had), my joy for life, many opportunities, and my prayer life. Without knowing, I ran away from this confusion for so long that it finally became a wall I couldn't run past.

I lost most of my self-confidence over analyzing myself: my looks, my style, my behavior, my thoughts, my opinions, what other's thought about me (overall), and my lack of understanding the Truth of who I am having Christ in me (I didn't even understand this thought). I was always looking for way to find value in myself... and none ever lived up to my expectations. One way I found (some) satisfaction is when Daniel and I had the same opinion or thought on something. When we were so "similar" I felt so "close." So my confidence was not in myself, but in Daniel.

I lost my joy for life. My expectations were never met... because I always failed or embarrassed myself. When someone didn't think I was funny, I thought I was a loser. When someone told me I was too loud, I shut up completely because I wasn't worthy to talk. When I had some exciting realization and no one understood me and I just sounded so confusing, I felt like an idiot. I lost my joy to study the Word. I lost my joy to make other's laugh. I lost my joy to encourage and comfort. I wasn't worthy enough. (wow?)

I lost out on many opportunities because I was too scared. I feared losing someone, something, or someone's value on me. I let amazing opportunities slip right by me even if I had this feeling I shouldn't. There were times where I could have been given or experienced so many amazing things... but because of my lack of confidence, I lost out on it.

I lost out on my prayer life. Why? Because for some reason, I didn't seem to think to ask Him what He thought. That and I was too lazy to go in His Word and find it for myself, I wanted it to be given to me. Funny thing, the answers were given to me. I was seeking closeness and comfort and peace... and it was with me the whole time. I just chose to walk away from it.

And for Daniel. The pressure was enormous. I thought I felt burdened, imagine how he felt? He married a woman who was so hard to understand and get to know. He thought he married an open-book (and I thought I was one) but marriage really does bring out some things I would have maybe never seen?! It was discouraging for him because he didn't know how to encourage or comfort me because I didn't even know how. Worst, I believe he felt a bit helpless. But I am so thankful that he continued to be an ear for me, a hand to hold, and a lap to cry on. He took the pressure, wrapped it tightly and made it the most comfortable and peaceful place he could. He did what an amazing husband would do: just "be" with me and be hopeful for me. (Thanks baby.)

Not the best photo of me, but a sweet moment for us. :)
This is the joyful Jamie and her sweet loving husband, Daniel.
When I finally saw all of these problems... I was ready to find the solutions. But if you know one thing, there is TRULY only one solution. It's Him, my first love, my Lord. And ohhhhhh, when I decided to come to Him... the load got tremendously lighter. When I began my "desired disciplines" rather than make habit, I could feel a bit of freedom. When I made time for Him, I could see my thoughts being refocused. When I turned to Him for confidence, He said "trust Me." When I turned to Him to feel value, He said "I sent my Son to die for YOU!" When I turned to Him to fill me with joy, He said "What can bring you more joy than the hope I have set before you!" And when I finally gave into His Truth's that were already embedded in my heart... there was no stopping us!

I finally learned to say "yes" to myself.... to a cup of coffee, my favorite TV show, craft time, reading a book for hours and getting lost in the sun on my blanket by the grass. I finally began giving my opinion, speaking for myself, and being vulnerable. I was becoming more confident in my own "sense of style" and ideas. I began to enjoy cooking for Daniel and felt free to waste non-sense time relaxing and re-energizing. I began to be comfortable in my funny, quirky, loud personality of mine... I began to embrace it! I finally learned to stop asking Daniel for his opinion all the time... and come to find out, he hates that I ASK SO MUCH!? (hahaha)

And there is a different essence to our home. A bit more uniqueness and quirk. I enjoy our little tree house full of "us." I enjoy our happy moments of not caring and just enjoying. I love knowing that we might disagree on something and that doesn't mean we aren't "meant to be." I love knowing we are different. That we both need some time to ourselves sometimes and that I am not weird for that. I am still learning how to have friendships but I am so glad that he is great at his!

I realized that I can be me. I can remain myself and be married. That Daniel can be himself. And we can still be married. I realized that marriage is about "one flesh" but that it doesn't mean "same exact person" also known as "clone."  We are both made so uniquely and this is what we should emphasize in our "one flesh" marriage. I don't know what you think, but my new "desired discipline" on top of praying specifically and JUST enjoying the Word (not analyzing) is focus on Daniel's unique and different qualities (that are different than my own) and appreciate them. And hopefully, I will learn to do the same for myself. But I believe there should be a balance, I don't want EVERYTHING to be about me. I will post back about those one day soon!

But I continue to fight, with a much stronger Army on my journey. I am thankful for those who have been praying for me... and encouraging me to write this post. I am totally praying that this would make way into someone's life who is struggling too... and that this would be more encouragement than anything. It's a beautiful picture when you find His glory in your marriage.

9 days of vacation

35 hours of driving.
9 days of vacation.
6 days of camping.
3 different states.
Equals to a wonderful roadtrip/camping vacation
that was more than needed for our hardworking bodies!
The long days in the car were worth it.
Suzy, our Suby (Subaru) made it.
After the hot days traveling through the mountains, she was glad to take her rest... when we ate some food in the wee hours of the morning at Denny's or the million stops we made at the gas stations to fill er' up! She was thankful for those rests and so was I!

Daniel, he drove majority of the trip. I generally do best sitting in the passenger seat holding his hand and singing to my favorite Jack Johnson songs as the windows are down and the hot breeze hits my face making my eyes smaller and smaller. I am a great companion for a road trip. :) We drove through lots of dessert, yuck. But we totally enjoyed the heat. We don't get tremendously HOT days here in Washington... so we took advantage of the sun... taking in more than we knew we could and leaving off the sunscreen. After stopping the first night to sleep at some random campsite- random and spontaneous- we headed up the mountain into Tahoe to see my wonderfully great family!
Some of the many things we were able to do when we arrived for the next 6 days:
Daniel got to meet our niece, Emma-Elizabeth for the first time ever (at 2 1/2 months old)!
We got lots of hugs and kisses all week.
Long walks and conversations with each other.. and me personally with my momma and sister.
Campfires, lots and lots and lots and lots of BIG campfires!
(One night, the Ranger came by... we thought we were being too loud but he was REALLY upset about our large fire!)
Big trips to Fallen Leaf Lake... a quick walk up the path!
Lots of relaxing in our double-man hammock!
Gambled and didn't lose too bad.
Went out to dinner at "The Beacon," Lake front for my grandparent's anniversary (25 years)!
Jumped, swam and floated in the lake.
Played catch with my daddy, the best!
Got demolished in Scrabble one too many times.
Made dinners and lunches and breakfasts with my family!
Played with family I haven't seen in ages!
Went to breakfast with my sister... and played Rummy there too!
Held the Emma-E girl, oh she is a great snuggler.
Took a platoon boat on the lake... it's a favorite thing of mine to do!
Road around all of Lake Tahoe with my husband... 6 hours and 73 miles.
(I'll blog about this probably tomorrow.)
Laughed with my family.
Cried with my family.
Enjoyed my family.
& now of course miss my family.

After a great 6 days, we unfortunately had to leave. Responsibilities awaited us back here in Washington. So we left... on a long trek home. BUT some great friends of ours were living in Oregon for the summer (farming) and they just HAPPENED to be on our way home. So after another long day of driving, we made it to the dessert-y farm area of Christmas Valley where the Troyer family welcomed us with hugs and delicious dinner!
We enjoyed our stay with them as we caught up on life, played with their adorable kids, and taught us all about how this farm thing works! Daniel and I were able to ride in the "swather," I think I spelled it wrong- which is a large lawn mower to cut the alfalfa to make big blocks of hay... each one weighing about 1,500 pounds! After a great nights rest, some coffee and snuggles with the kids... we all headed to Bend, OR (Daniel and I taking the girls) to check out the city. It was all such a blast! And after a hot day there... we left for Washington and made it home before midnight!

Now we are home... it's suppose to be 80*+ here and I have to go grocery shopping and laundry. I am so excited to blog more about this trip... but I couldn't leave you all hanging! Posting more pictures, more stories, and some things I have learned these past 9 days!

Thanks for reading!

You know your husband loves you when...

My husband, Daniel- he is a private man. He doesn't usually appreciate me "bragging" about the many amazing things he has done for me or says to me. He just likes to keep those things personal and private... keep the intimacy and I hands down respect that. Every once and a while I just can't help but reminisce on the ways he shows me he loves me... it's challenging but even more encouraging to me.

Of course I know this post sounds so black and white... but I wanted to share with you how my husband showed me he loved me this week:

1. After having oral surgery to fix his front tooth on Tuesday (sedated and titanium screw drilled into his gums), he was taking care of me. He woke up after being sedated, ate some food... and the next thing you know I am laying on the couch sharing my heart with him as he is listening to me, holding my hand, and comforting me. Selflessness right? Here he is in pain... and here I was upset and with his actions said, "How can I love you NOW?" He loves me.

2. Wednesday night we went to bed pretty late. We had his brother and a friend over to hang out and we ended up watching some "Top Gear" and eating the best chocolate chip cookies ever! The next morning, my sweet husband wakes up at 5 am! A few hours is USUALLY not even sleep for me... but after a little shuffling and the sun starting to peek through our window I began to wake up too. :) After saying our "good mornings" he invited me on a bike ride! We rode 21 miles together at 6 am... got ready for work and went out to breakfast to "Jake's Diner" for our first experience! This was all finished before 9 am! When he invites me to ride with him, to accompany him on his favorite part of the day... that's how he shows me he loves me. I love him.

3. One of my favorite things Daniel does for me frequently is just observe me "being." He is interested in how long it takes me to get ready, or how I do it? Him taking interest in my day... another action he does frequently to show me that he loves me. And we love each other so very much.

Many people say, "Oh, you're just in the honeymoon stage." I just answer back with, "... for the rest of our lives."

I love this man with all my heart. I am so thankful that I am the only person who knows him as well as I do. I am so thankful that we chose to be young and married. He is what I wanted in a husband. A husband who didn't always have to say "I love you" but who could show me often that he loves me. And Daniel, he does that.
This picture was taken in Canada after he scored his first
goal playing hockey. He looked at me in the stands and
pointed to his one and only. Just another way he has
shown me through the years that he loves me.

How does a man in your life show you that he loves you...? Daily? Yearly? Tell me! Or how do you show a man in your life you love him?
